Bridge

has some facts backing it up.

University is a transitional period that brings about many firsts, and challenges, that may be overwhelming and cause anxious behaviours to develop.

McGhie, V. (2016). Entering university studies: identifying enabling factors for a successful transition from school to university. Higher Education, 73(3), 407–422. doi: 10.1007/s10734-016-0100-2.

Cultural probes were given to five participants in the research process. The summarised results revealed a few notable things.

The probes affirmed that the participants have a good understanding of self and do not shy away from expressing and evaluating how they feel.

1.

Participants liked the concept of being able to fill something out on a daily basis.

2.

The participants were prepared and able to identify emotions, feelings, and reactions to events when they were given the safe space and prompts to do so.

Below is a summary of a conversation with

Mr. Raymond Lee, Head Counsellor at Sunway University.

A concept like this would work.

There is a current trend in moving towards a digital format for most things. An online platform like this falls under the tele-mental health category. It's economical, accessible, and within the realm of what's commonplace. Plus, there is a need for it.

It comes down to the people upstairs.

Despite people's willingness to promote mental health, it's not given that much importance from an organisational perspective. The government and campuses do hold events here and there, one every now and then, but it's not a steady integration. There is a gap. Until this changes, the steps taken towards ending stigma will be slow, but still important.

Counselling can be done by everyone with the right tools and willingness.

Students and staff at Sunway University give their own free time to volunteer and receive training from counsellors on how to by allies to the betterment of student mental health. Modules are organised in the form of workshops and talks by the counselling centre. Students work under the Peer Counselling Volunteers club and staff work under the WE-Care team.

The stigma shoud end.

It should be as easy for someone to reach out to about their mental health, as it is for someone to reach out when they're in physical pain. There should be no difference between the two. This is the idea that we should be working towards.
